What Are Adaptogens and Why Should You Take Them?

What Are Adaptogens? 

Adaptogens are natural substances that can help your body adapt to stressors like environmental toxins or emotional distress.  They work by helping your body to regulate hormones like cortisol (the stress hormone) or adrenaline (the “fight-or-flight” hormone).  By balancing out these hormones, adaptogens can help you feel calmer and more focused even when you’re under pressure. 

Common Adaptogens 

There are many different types of adaptogens out there,  some of the most popular ones include Chaga,  Maca,  Ashwagandha,  Ginseng,  Rhodiola Rosea,  Licorice Root, Astragalus Root and  Reishi Mushroom.  Each one has its own unique benefits.  Chaga is known for its anti-inflammatory properties while Maca is said to boost energy levels and Ashwagandha is known for its calming effects on the nervous system.  Ginseng is a great energy booster,  Rhodiola Rosea has been linked to improved concentration,  Licorice Root helps support healthy digestion,  Astragalus Root helps protect the immune system and Reishi Mushroom boosts overall health.
